Mohammad Savari, Ph.D.

I am a visiting assistant professor from Iran. I joined the Levin Lab (EcLF) in September 2023. I got my Ph.D. in medical Bacteriology from the Tehran University of Medical Sciences and then joined the Department of Microbiology in the School of Medicine at Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, both in Iran. My research mostly focuses on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among the ESKAPE group and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. I am also interested in host-pathogen interactions. We study new alternatives for antibiotics, including antimicrobial peptides, nano-materials, toxin-antitoxin systems, RNA-based antibiotics, and phage therapy. In ECLF, I study the population and evolutionary dynamics of Klebsiella pneumonia and its phages. I also study what the criteria are that make a phage suitable for phage therapy. We also study the joint action of phage therapy, antibiotics, and innate immune responses to overcome AMR. For this purpose, we use the Galleria mellonella as an in vivo system.
